How to stop my dog from scratching the door

Many dogs tend to scratch the door when their owners are not home, when they want to go out, or when they are stressed. Learn how to avoid it and solutions.

If a dog scratches a door means that your mood is going through a stage of anxiety, of too much emotion or of aggressiveness. There are many ways to protect the doors, just as there are ways to prevent them from doing so, or at least, to prevent them from breaking.

What can I use to prevent scratching?

The first solution is the simplest and most obvious, if we don't want our dog to break the door the most useful thing would be add a metal grill that helps against scratches and absorbs all the damage. There is specialized grating type for pets, which is usually much more durable.

If we do not want to install a metal grill that covers a large part, we can always install a protective plate that is screwed to the door, this will prevent unwanted scratches. Another option is cover the weather stripping of the door with vinyl the same size as the jamb, since some dogs dream of scratching the weather stripping band.

If the door that scratches is a door to a closed terrace that you can enter and exit without any problem, we can simply install a door for him and so you can come and go as you please.

This will prevent scratches and our dog will be happier.

How can I make it not scratch?

Preventing our pet from scratching can be a long task, but we can teach him not to do it with these simple steps:

  • Every time the dog scratches the door you should stop him. Call him, stand between him and the door and scold him.
  • Don't give him any treats while he scratches. If you give him treats to stop him from scratching, the dog will think he has a reward.
  • Try crating him for 30 minutes to help the dog overcome separation anxiety. That is until he learns that separating or being alone is not bad.

If none of this works it will be necessary to block access our pet at the doors, with large objects or pet bars Don't let him get close. We can also always leave him toys near the door so he is distracted.

Another very useful thing is to file and cut the nails of our dog, it will prevent him from scratching the door. Yes indeed, when filing you should avoid pink areas since they are small blood vessels and nerves. You can also play with him a lot in the street so that he arrives tired.
